Divine Surveillance vs Teenage VPNs

God’s IT Department Needs Upgrades

The technological arms race between religious authority surveillance and teenage privacy measures resembles cybersecurity conflicts, except one side has divine backing and still loses consistently.

Traditional surveillance relied on community networks—everyone knows everyone, gossip travels faster than light, privacy doesn’t exist. This system worked brilliantly for centuries, right up until teenagers got smartphones and discovered their parents don’t understand how apps work.

Religious authorities adapted slowly. Initial responses included banning technology entirely, which worked for approximately nobody, or demanding access to all devices, which teenagers circumvented through secondary devices, encrypted apps, and the ancient technique of deleting everything before coming home.

Some churches hired “technology consultants” to help parents monitor teenage activity. The consultants taught parents about parental controls and monitoring software, while teenagers taught each other about VPNs, incognito mode, and finsta accounts. The consultants meant well but never stood a chance.

Youth pastors attempted engaging with teenagers on their platforms, joining Instagram and TikTok to maintain influence. Teenagers responded by migrating to platforms their pastors hadn’t discovered yet, maintaining a perpetual two-platform lead in the social media arms race.

The fundamental problem: surveillance requires technological sophistication that increases faster than most religious authorities can adapt. By the time churches develop monitoring strategies for one platform, teenagers have abandoned it for three new ones nobody over thirty has heard of.

God may be omniscient, but divine surveillance apparently doesn’t include administrator access to encrypted messaging apps, creating theological complications for traditions built on the assumption of constant monitoring.
