Goa Declares Siesta a National Sport

Napping finally recognized as India’s most consistent performance metric.

Goa’s government has officially recognized the afternoon nap as a competitive sport, claiming it’s the only event where participants can dream of gold and actually achieve it. “Goa Siesta League” (GSL) events are now hosted in beachside hammocks with sponsors from pillow manufacturers and anti-anxiety tea brands. According to The Times of India, the competition rewards players for endurance, snoring rhythm, and drool symmetry.

Local athletes take pride in their discipline. “It’s not easy,” says reigning champion Deepak Fernandes. “You must resist all distractions—tourists, mosquitoes, and your boss calling you lazy.” The international governing body, Sleep Without Borders, praised Goa’s effort, calling it “the healthiest protest against capitalism yet.”

Tourists love the vibe. Foreigners report record happiness rates after 14-hour naps. Some even forgot to return home. Meanwhile, economists fear productivity loss, but Goans argue that the GDP of joy outweighs the GDP of labor. “If sleeping were taxed,” said one vendor, “India would be rich overnight.”

To qualify for the finals, competitors must maintain a steady REM cycle while surrounded by Bollywood music. “That’s our triathlon,” Fernandes said proudly. “Mind, body, and mattress.”
