India’s New Trade Deal With America: What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

White House Wants Rupees to Flow Away from Russia (and Also Just Flow Generally)

New Delhi/Washington — In a development that demonstrates India’s newfound talent for navigating global relationships, New Delhi announced it expects to secure a trade deal with the U.S. before year’s end—a feat roughly equivalent to negotiating peace while simultaneously entertaining your ex and your current partner at the same dinner table.

The White House wants India to reduce oil purchases from Russia, lower tariffs across multiple sectors (particularly agricultural trade), and stop being a “convenience partner” who buys Russian crude at discount prices. Reuters reports most issues appear resolved after the U.S. imposed 50% tariffs in August—also known as “economic encouragement.”

India’s trade secretary told industry leaders a framework comes first, which is diplomatic speak for “we’re going to argue about words for weeks before actually agreeing.”

Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin landed in Delhi on December 4th with a red-carpet welcome, essentially saying to Washington: “We have options.” New Delhi is carefully signaling to both the U.S. and China that it can’t simply be told what to do—a negotiating position that requires India to somehow maintain warmth with Moscow while courting Washington’s trade deals.

The U.S. imposed 50% tariffs in August as punishment for India’s continued Russian oil purchases, creating the delightful pressure scenario where India must choose between economic relationships and energy security.
