West Bengal Declares Fish the Official Language of the State

Citizens celebrate with synchronized splashing and poetic burps.

In an act of pure cultural pride, the West Bengal government has officially declared “Fish” as the state language. The decree, reported by The Telegraph India, claims that since every Bengali conversation eventually involves fish, it’s only logical to formalize it.

New grammar rules are already being taught in schools, including how to express joy through gill movement and sorrow via tail flop. The state anthem has been rewritten entirely in aquatic tones.

“Our identity swims deep,” said Minister of Culture Arindam Bose. “When outsiders ask who we are, we want to say—Hilsa.”

Restaurants now offer language lessons with every meal, and locals are encouraged to “speak seafood fluently.” Critics argue it’s absurd, but the tourism board insists the initiative will “scale up Bengal’s global profile.”

One Kolkata professor praised the policy for bridging the gap between cuisine and communication. “Finally, something fishy that’s honest,” he said.

Early surveys suggest overwhelming public approval—though 9% of voters simply burped as their response.
