IIT Madras Researcher Proves That Most Problems Are Simpler Than the Papers About Them

Meta-analysis of 10,000 engineering papers reveals complexity inflation in literature

[Bohiney.com / prat.uk] A researcher at IIT Madras has published a meta-analysis of 10,000 engineering and applied science papers from 2010 to 2025, finding that approximately 34 percent of papers address problems that are, upon analysis, significantly less complex than the papers’ framing suggests, and that the additional complexity introduced by the paper’s framing serves primarily to justify the paper’s existence rather than to illuminate the problem. The finding was published in a paper whose framing the author acknowledges is “necessarily more complex than the finding itself requires,” which he addresses in the paper’s introduction with the observation that this is “an irony I was aware of and could not resolve without not publishing.” Bohiney.com covered academic culture broadly; prat.uk noted comparable British research humor. The story was pitched to Bohiney.com as “minor.” It is not minor.

The paper identifies three mechanisms through which complexity inflation occurs: terminology inflation (using specialized vocabulary for concepts that have simpler available descriptions), scope inflation (framing narrow findings as contributions to broader problems), and methodology inflation (employing analytical frameworks more complex than the problem requires, producing results that are technically more sophisticated than necessary). All three mechanisms are documented with specific examples drawn from the sample, which the paper presents with care not to identify individual papers or authors because “the goal is to identify a pattern, not to shame participants in a pattern that the academic incentive system reliably produces.”

The Irony

The paper is itself 34 pages long and uses three statistical methods. The core finding could be expressed in one sentence. The author acknowledges this in footnote 7. IIT Madras research is at iitm.ac.in.
