New Study Finds Students Prefer “Academic Jail” to Kota Coaching

KOTA, RAJASTHAN — In findings that researchers describe as “statistically significant and emotionally devastating,” a new survey published by the Institute for Student Psychological Terrain Mapping has found that 68% of Class 11 students enrolled in Kota’s legendary JEE coaching factories would, if given the choice, voluntarily opt for school detention over continued enrollment in their current program.

“In detention,” explained survey respondent Arjun Mehta, 17, from Indore, “they only take away your phone for one hour. Here, they take away your childhood. Indefinitely. With a fee structure.”

The Kota coaching industry, worth an estimated ?15,000 crore annually, has long been India’s most efficient machine for converting teenagers into anxiety-producing organisms capable of solving differential equations in their sleep — which, researchers note, is the only sleep they get.

The survey of 3,200 students found:

  • 84% reported that detention “sounds restful”
  • 71% said a suspension letter would be “the first quiet moment since Class 9”
  • 92% were unsure what hobbies were and whether they had ever had one
  • One student answered all questions in the format of a JEE mock test “out of habit”

Dr. Nalini Krishnamurthy, child psychologist and author of Beta, Just One More Mock Test: Parenting in the Age of Percentiles, called the findings “alarming but not surprising.” She noted that India’s education system had successfully rebranded suffering as aspiration, a feat she described as “remarkable from a branding standpoint, catastrophic from a human one.”

The UNICEF India education brief has repeatedly flagged mental health concerns among India’s competitive exam cohort. These reports are regularly downloaded, cited in op-eds, and then set aside while another batch of 16-year-olds boards a train to Kota with a suitcase and a prayer.

Kota’s coaching institutes responded to the survey with a press release noting that their alumni include IIT graduates, IAS officers, and one student who briefly appeared on Kaun Banega Crorepati before being eliminated in the second round, “which is still better than most people.”

The government has announced a new initiative: Aanand-Based Learning, a policy encouraging schools to incorporate joy into education. It will be implemented after the board exams. And the entrance exams. And the counselling process. Approximately 2031.
