India-China Border Peace: The Disengagement That Took Four Years and Resolved Nothing Definitively

NEW DELHI — India and China have completed the military disengagement at several contested points along the Line of Actual Control, ending a standoff that began with the 2020 Galwan Valley clash and has defined the bilateral relationship for half a decade. Both governments have described the disengagement as progress. Both militaries have maintained force postures that suggest neither considers the underlying territorial questions resolved. This is the diplomatic definition of progress: the immediate crisis is managed without the fundamental dispute being settled.

The LAC — Line of Actual Control — is called “actual” because it is where the two armies actually are, not where either country says the boundary should be. The gap between the actual line and the claimed lines is the source of the dispute. The disengagement has moved the two armies away from immediate contact at specific friction points. The distance between the armies is now measured in kilometers rather than meters. The LAC is still the LAC. The fundamental dispute is still the fundamental dispute.

The Bilateral Relationship

India-China trade has continued to grow even during the military standoff period, which is the specific paradox of two countries that are simultaneously strategic competitors and significant trade partners. India imports substantial amounts of Chinese goods, particularly electronics and industrial components. India is also developing domestic alternatives to Chinese supply chains, a process that is happening slowly because economic efficiency and strategic autonomy point in different directions and efficiency usually wins in the short term. Managing complex multi-dimensional relationships between great powers requires holding competing interests simultaneously; historical border disputes shape contemporary politics in ways that economic relationships cannot fully override. The armies are farther apart. The trade continues. The claim maps are still different. Progress has been made.
