MUMBAI — A Mumbai-based Bollywood producer announced Tuesday that he would abandon a planned British-set production, originally scheduled to film on location in central London, in favor of constructing a Mumbai Film City set that replicates Trafalgar Square. The producer cited the United Kingdom highest-developed-world borrowing costs as the deciding operational factor.
The Calculation
According to the producers internal cost analysis, leaked to the Indian Express, the financing costs of a UK location production under current sterling borrowing conditions would have totaled approximately Rs 47 crore. The cost of constructing a 1:1 replica of Trafalgar Square at Film City, including a small Nelsons Column made of pressed plywood and a working fountain, totals approximately Rs 6 crore. The savings, accordingly, are approximately 87 percent.
The Production Note
The producer has indicated that the visual quality of the Mumbai-built Trafalgar Square will be, on every available cinematographic comparison, indistinguishable from the original at standard Bollywood resolution. The Bank of England recent rate rise was, the producer noted, the small additional pressure that decisively tipped the production budget calculation. Threadneedle Street has not commented.
The plywood Nelsons Column begins construction next month.
