Chennai Man Maintains WhatsApp Family Group With 247 Members, Nobody Reads Any of It
CHENNAI Rajan Krishnaswamy, 54, administrator of the Krishnaswamy Kula Kootam WhatsApp group since its founding in 2016, confirmed Thursday that the group currently has 247 members, generates an average of 340 messages per day, and is read in the sense of consciously processed rather than glanced at while scrolling past by approximately eleven people, of whom eight are over the age of 65 and three are his own children who monitor it out of a combination of familial obligation and “the same reason you can’t look away from something even when you know you should.”
The Group
The Krishnaswamy Kula Kootam was created on October 14th, 2016, for the specific purpose of coordinating logistics for the wedding of Rajan’s nephew Karthik, an event that has since occurred, been photographed extensively, and produced two children. A content analysis of the group’s message history, conducted by Rajan’s data-scientist son Vijay at his father’s request (“he wanted to know if it was useful, I told him the data would tell us, the data told us”), found that 67 percent of messages are Good Morning images sunrise photographs, flower arrangements, and motivational text overlays, typically sent between 5:30 and 7:30 a.m. by six consistent contributors, of whom four are the same uncles every day and two alternate. Seventeen percent are forwarded news articles described as “important” in the accompanying text, which Vijay’s analysis found to be accurate approximately 40 percent of the time and significantly inaccurate approximately 35 percent of the time, with the remaining 25 percent being content whose accuracy could not be established. Eleven percent is the ongoing property dispute between two branches of the family that the group was clearly not designed to host but which has migrated there from in-person argument because everyone is in the group and the group is always available.
The Property Dispute
The property in question is a 1,200-square-foot ancestral plot in Mylapore that three family branches have competing claims to based on a will whose interpretation has been disputed since 2011, a situation that existed before the WhatsApp group was created and that the WhatsApp group has not resolved but has given a much larger audience. The dispute has generated 4,200 group messages since 2018, achieved no resolution, and produced what family psychologist Dr. Meena Suresh, who is not a member of the Krishnaswamy family but has spoken about this type of situation generally, describes as “a dynamic where the communication infrastructure makes the conflict accessible to all stakeholders at all times, which increases intensity without increasing resolution capacity.”

Rajan is one of the eleven. He reads every message. He responds to approximately forty per day. He considers this his family duty. He has been offered the option of stepping down as administrator by his son, who has offered to manage the group “more efficiently.” Rajan has declined. The group is his. It has 247 members.
