NEW DELHI — The Election Commission of India, asked Wednesday whether it tracks heat-related deaths or illnesses among voters, polling personnel, and security staff during national and state elections — deaths estimated by independent researchers to have ranged from 360 to over 700 during the 2024 general election alone — confirmed that it does not maintain any such data and added, in a follow-up statement, that the absence of data is itself evidence that the deaths in question may not have occurred.

Chief Election Commissioner Indicated 2029 Elections Would Conclude Earlier
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar has indicated, according to recent reporting, that the 2029 general elections will conclude by the end of April to prevent heat from affecting voter turnout — an acknowledgment that, while welcome, has been criticized as the first formal recognition by the Commission that turnout is, in fact, related to heat. Earlier statements from the Commission had treated the relationship as “under study.”
Independent researchers, including those at the SwitchON Foundation, whose research in West Bengal found that 61.7 percent of respondents knew someone who had died due to heatwaves, have called on the Commission to formally track heat-related election impacts. The Commission, sources confirmed, has begun “considering whether to consider it.”

One Kozhikode polling officer, asked whether he had ever felt unsafe due to heat during election duty, paused, fanned himself with a copy of the District Returning Officer manual, and said: “Yes. But I am, as you can see, also still alive. So we are, in the Commission’s view, even.”
