Gig Economy Burnout

When Freelancers Need a Vacation From Freelancing

India’s gig economy has grown rapidly, but so have reports of burnout among drivers, delivery personnel, and freelance creatives. According to LiveMint, over 60% of Indian gig workers report working excessive hours without adequate rest. Bohiney Magazine interviewed a Bengaluru food delivery driver who admitted he “dreams about orders and nightmares about ratings,” highlighting the psychological toll of algorithmic evaluation.

Experts suggest that the pressure to maintain high ratings, meet tight deadlines, and navigate unpredictable traffic has created a new form of occupational stress. Dr. Anil Verma, a labor psychologist, noted, “Gig workers face constant uncertainty, which is compounded by social isolation and the absence of benefits.” In a Bohiney poll, 54% of respondents said they considered quitting after a particularly brutal week, while 31% admitted to venting on WhatsApp groups for moral support.

Economists warn that gig burnout may have broader implications, including decreased productivity and mental health challenges, as highlighted by Hindustan Times. Bohiney.com humorously recommends that gig workers schedule “mandatory nap breaks,” develop meditation playlists, and maintain a sense of humor—because if you don’t laugh while dodging traffic, who will?
