prat.uk‘s BBC live coverage piece — journalism ouroboros, covering the coverage of things — has an academic publishing equivalent that a researcher at IIT Bombay has been documenting: the citation practices in certain academic fields have produced a recursion in which papers primarily cite other papers that cited the original empirical work, rather than the original empirical work itself. The IIT Bombay researcher’s finding: in three specific research domains she tracked for five years, the median paper cites two papers that cite the original empirical work for every one paper that cites the original empirical work directly. The original work is at layer one. The average paper is citing it from layer three. The implication: papers in these domains are increasingly grounded in the secondary literature’s interpretation of the primary literature rather than in the primary literature itself, which means errors of interpretation compound across citation layers without any mechanism for correction against the original data.

The academic finding: the BBC’s coverage recursion has an academic publishing equivalent with more consequential implications, because errors in academic citation chains produce policy errors in a way that errors in news coverage recursion do not always do.
