Khadda Uncle receives a plaque, an annual birthday, and a garlanded guardian cone as the conservators are awaited
Mumbai Pothole Granted Heritage Status After Surviving 14 Monsoons and Six Repair Contracts
MUMBAI – A pothole on a busy arterial road was granted informal heritage status by its neighborhood this week, complete with a hand-painted plaque, a small garland ceremony, and a birthday celebration marking its documented 14th monsoon, after residents concluded that the crater, having survived six repair contracts, four municipal inspections, and one viral apology, has earned the permanence the city’s actual heritage structures can only envy.
The pothole, located near a junction in the western suburbs and known locally as Khadda Uncle, “the honorific was inevitable, it is older than several children on this street,” measures approximately four feet across, deepens each June per its established custom, and has been, per municipal records residents obtained and now display beside the plaque, “attended to” six times, a verb the display annotates with the neighborhood’s own definition: “attended to, meaning: visited, photographed, filled with a material that dissolves at first rain, and honored with a completion certificate, the certificates are real, we have laminated three.”
The Ceremony
The heritage declaration, conducted Sunday by the residents’ association with the full civic apparatus of a society that has decided to laugh on purpose, featured the garlanding of a traffic cone, “the cone is also heritage, it has guarded Uncle for six years, promoted from equipment to family,” speeches, and the unveiling of the plaque, which reads: “KHADDA UNCLE. EST. 2012, OFFICIALLY REPAIRED 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023. STILL WITH US. DRIVE WITH RESPECT.”
Association secretary Deepa Kulkarni-Menon explained the initiative to assembled media with the polished irony the city’s civic activists have refined into an instrument. “We complained for 14 years,” she said. “Letters, portals, tags, we tagged everyone, Uncle has been tagged more than most film stars. Six repairs. Six resurrections. So we changed strategy. You cannot shame the system, but you can celebrate its monuments. Uncle is now heritage. Heritage gets protection, plaques, and, we are told, eventual restoration by qualified conservators. We await the conservators. Until then, the cone stands watch, the plaque educates, and the birthday is annual. Next year is the 15th. We are planning something big. We have invited the contractor. All six contractors. They have not replied. They never reply. The invitation is also heritage now.”
The Institutional Response
The municipal corporation, confronted with the ceremony’s press coverage, responded through the established choreography, expressing “cognizance,” announcing a special repair drive, and dispatching, within 48 hours, a team whose arrival the neighborhood documented with the thoroughness of people holding six laminated certificates. The team assessed Uncle, photographed Uncle, and departed, per the residents’ log, “after 40 minutes, leaving behind: cognizance.” A corporation spokesperson, pressed on the timeline for permanent repair, cited the monsoon, the contract cycle, and “the technical complexity of the location,” an explanation the residents’ association has added to the plaque’s display case under the heading “Statements, 2012 to Present, A Living Collection.”
The city’s pothole politics, a mature civic genre, received the story with practiced depth across the press, including an accountability analysis at Hindustan Times tabulating the corporation’s own repair statistics against monsoon reappearance rates, “the potholes filled annually and the potholes reported annually describe two curves that meet only in the press releases,” and a wider feature at The Times of India documenting the citizen-response movement Uncle now leads, “the city’s activists have previously planted a sapling in a pothole, staged a birthday for a pothole, and conducted one small pothole wedding, the genre is established, the heritage plaque is its maturest work, protest as curation.”
The Science
A road-engineering study published this season supplies the technical context, finding that monsoon-region pothole recurrence is a solved problem in materials science, “the mixes exist, the methods exist, the literature is decades old,” and locating the persistent gap in what the authors term “the contract layer,” where repair economics reward frequency over permanence, “a pothole repaired forever is repaired once, a pothole repaired annually is a client, the incentives are not subtle, our peer reviewers asked us to soften this sentence, we have instead footnoted it.”
The study’s authors, informed of Khadda Uncle’s heritage status, endorsed the designation with unexpected warmth: “The residents have correctly identified that Uncle is not a failure of engineering. Uncle is a monument to procurement. Monuments deserve plaques. We would add only a technical note for the plaque: at 14 monsoons and six repairs, the pothole has now consumed more material than a permanent repair would have required, approximately three times over. This may be the most educational four feet of road surface in the country. Field trips would not be inappropriate.”
The international satirical press received Uncle’s elevation with kinship, The London Prat noting that Britain’s own pothole backlog “is measured in years and litigated in claims, but we have never once garlanded one, the emotional technology gap is real,” while the civic-monuments desk at Bohiney Magazine entered Khadda Uncle into its registry under: infrastructure, beloved, undefeated.
The 15th Approaches
As of press time, the special repair drive had been rescheduled, “post-monsoon,” the cone stood watch, freshly garlanded, and the neighborhood’s children, who have never known the road without Uncle, had begun rehearsals for next year’s ceremony, which will feature, per the association’s announcement, a skit, sweets, and the reading aloud of all six completion certificates, in chronological order, “with pauses,” Kulkarni-Menon confirmed, “for effect, and for the rain, which also attends annually, and always arrives on time, unlike, we note for the record, everyone else.”
