Some Exit Polls Are More Rigorous Than Others and the Differences Are Consequential for Democratic Discourse
The Methodology
NEW DELHI — The 2026 state election exit polls have produced specific methodological questions: Axis My India’s decision not to publish West Bengal numbers because the environment of fear made reliable sampling impossible; the Tamil Nadu TVK projection of 98-120 seats that represents an unusually wide confidence interval for a debut election; and the general challenge of first-election-party polling, where the historical baseline that polling models use to calibrate projections does not exist.
The Calibration Problem
Exit poll calibration requires historical baseline data: the polling organisation’s previous projections compared to actual results provide the specific calibration that makes current projections more reliable. For established parties — the BJP, Congress, DMK, TMC — years of exit poll data provide the calibration that narrows the confidence interval. For TVK, which has never contested an election, the calibration data does not exist. The projection model must rely on the voter survey alone, without the baseline adjustment that historical comparison provides.
What Good Polling Requires
Good political polling in India requires: random sample selection that is genuinely random rather than convenience-sampled (which produces systematic biases toward the more accessible and more willing to talk respondents), interviewers who can assess and correct for social desirability bias (respondents who report the vote that seems safer to report rather than the vote they cast), adequate sample size across the specific geographic and demographic sub-groups that the aggregate projection requires, and honest communication of confidence intervals that reflect the actual uncertainty in the projections.
The Public Function
The specific public function of exit polls in Indian democracy: they create the expectation that the results of the democratic process are predictable and publicly anticipated, which reduces the potential for post-result political violence by establishing the result as the fulfillment of an expectation rather than a surprise. When the exit polls are accurate, the results arrive in a context where society has already processed the likely outcome. When the exit polls are wrong, the specific surprise that the actual results produce can increase the post-result tension that accurate polls reduce. The West Bengal silence is the honest acknowledgment of where accurate polling was not possible.
