IRCTC Offers to Manage Student Traffic Between Periods

MUMBAI — In what education officials are calling a “synergistic infrastructural merger,” the Central Board of Secondary Education has announced a landmark partnership with Indian Railways to manage hallway traffic in India’s 1.5 million schools using the same scheduling algorithm that governs the Mumbai Local train network — which is to say, a system that is theoretically precise, empirically chaotic, and spiritually transcendent.

“Between second and third period, we are seeing 800 children attempting to occupy a corridor designed for 200,” said Principal Sulochana Iyer of Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 7, gesturing at a hallway that smelled of chalk dust and existential dread. “We contacted IRCTC. They said this was, quote, ‘within normal parameters.'”

Under the new Rashtriya Corridor Yojana, students will be issued colour-coded passes — General, Sleeper, and AC First Class — determining their hallway priority. General pass holders will reach the bathroom eventually. AC First Class holders will receive a pre-assigned seat near the water fountain, subject to availability, which is never.

A pilot program at Delhi Public School found that 73% of students arrived at their next classroom “on time, spiritually if not physically.” The remaining 27% were declared “waitlisted” and asked to stand near the stairwell until a seat opened up in Class 9-B.

The Institute for Corridor Management and Destiny Studies, a think tank registered last Tuesday, praised the move as “a triumph of jugaad engineering.” Its founder, Dr. Prashant Naik, noted that Indian civilization had been managing crowd flow since the Kumbh Mela and needed no Western consultants to tell it how hallways work.

“Have you seen Kumbh Mela?” he said. “Sixty million people. No one uses a hallway pass. It is managed by faith, momentum, and the occasional lathi.”

The Ministry of Education confirmed the rollout will be phased: Tier-1 cities will implement the system by 2026, Tier-2 cities by 2028, and rural schools will receive a pamphlet explaining the concept by 2031, printed in Comic Sans on paper that smells faintly of optimism.

Parents expressed concern that students in General category passes might miss class entirely. The Ministry assured them this was “not materially different from the current situation” and should not be cause for alarm.
