India’s Staircases Develop Sentience After Absorbing 75 Years of Competitive Exam Stress

CHENNAI In a development that scientists are calling “unprecedented” and school administrators are calling “not our budget’s problem,” structural engineers have confirmed that the main staircase of Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 4, Adyar, has developed measurable sentience after absorbing an estimated 75 years of compounded academic anxiety from students climbing its steps on their way to mathematics examinations.
“The staircase knows things,” said civil engineer Subbaiah Raman, who was called in for a routine inspection and left with what he describes as “questions about consciousness.” “It anticipates footfall. It adjusts its resonance frequency during exam season. Last Tuesday it hummed Vande Mataram faintly at 8:55 a.m., five minutes before the board practical.”
The National Council of Educational Research and Training has convened an emergency working group, whose preliminary report recommends that the staircase be issued its own Aadhaar number, a school roll number, and assessed under the Right to Education Act though it noted the staircase’s learning outcomes are, at present, “exceeding those of several Class 11 students.”
The phenomenon, dubbed Sopan Chetna (Staircase Consciousness) by the working group, is believed to result from decades of accumulated psychic residue: the whispered prayers before chemistry papers, the panicked recitation of trigonometric identities, the hushed tears after result day, and most potently the infinite sighs of students who got 98.6% and needed 98.7% for their preferred college.
Physicist Dr. Arjun Balakrishnan of IIT Madras proposed a more prosaic explanation involving vibration harmonics and concrete microporosity, but was drowned out at the press conference by a journalist asking the staircase directly whether it preferred CBSE or ICSE. The staircase reportedly groaned. Both boards claimed this as an endorsement.
Parents have begun petitioning to have their children tutored by the staircase, noting that it has absorbed more syllabus content than most coaching faculty. One father from Mylapore offered ?2,000 per session. The staircase did not respond, which is consistent with how most coaching institutes also behave.
The Hindu’s education desk has requested an interview. The staircase’s media representative a Class 12 student named Devansh who volunteered for the role says scheduling is difficult as the staircase is “very busy during period changes.”
The Ministry of Education has neither confirmed nor denied the staircase’s sentience, but has noted that if confirmed, it will be subject to the National Education Policy 2020 and expected to demonstrate foundational literacy by Class 3.
