He says the secret is “just paying attention, and having strong opinions on everything”
A regular at a longtime Kolkata neighborhood tea stall has reportedly resolved, to his own satisfaction, the city’s traffic congestion, the national cricket selection committee’s ongoing controversies, and a neighbor’s marital dispute, all within a single morning session known locally as “adda.”
A Productive Morning
“Traffic needs better planning, obviously,” said regular Debashish Ghosh, sipping his tea. “Selection needs less favoritism. And as for the neighbor’s situation, honestly, both sides need to just talk to each other properly, like adults. I’ve told them this personally.”
Fellow regulars at the stall say Ghosh’s morning analysis sessions have become a fixture of the block’s social calendar, with several admitting they now time their own tea breaks specifically around his arrival “for the full commentary.”
An Institution of Opinion
The tea stall owner, who has run the shop for over two decades, says Ghosh’s table has become something of an unofficial neighborhood parliament, complete with “regular attendees, recurring topics, and absolutely no binding authority whatsoever.”
Ghosh insists his conclusions, while never formally adopted by any relevant body, remain “fundamentally correct,” a claim he says is “borne out, eventually, by history, if you wait long enough.”
A Legacy of Adda
The London Prat‘s culture desk covers Britain’s own pub-based policy debates, which similarly resolve everything from football tactics to national politics without any actual authority.
The Hindu notes adda culture remains a deeply rooted feature of Kolkata’s social fabric, tea stall by tea stall.
Ghosh says he remains available most mornings, “same table, same tea, same strong opinions, delivered free of charge.”
